The Jefferson Nickel is comprised of 75% copper and only 25% nickel. From 1938 through 2003 the Jefferson Nickel's design remained the same, but in 2004 the Westward Journey Nickels Series changed all that. There were 2 new Jefferson Nickel designs in 2004 and 2 more new designs in 2005 to commemorate the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis & Clark Expedition. In 2006 the Jefferson Nickel was given a brand new obverse design, while the Monticello reverse was enhanced with more details than the previous image.
