       ***Indian and Lincoln Cents***

The small cent was introduced in the United States during the 1850s, after a 3 year flirtation with the Flying Eagle pattern coin. The Indian Head Cent became the new classic small penny in 1859 and lasted 50 years. In reality, the image on the obverse is not an Indian, but a representation of Lady Liberty wearing an Indian headdress. In 1909 the Lincoln Cent was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth and went on to replace the Indian Head Cent. In 1959 the "Wheat Ears" reverse was replaced by the Lincoln Memorial in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, and there are more changes in store for 2009's 200th anniversary.
